The purpose of this fund is to provide summer housing support for Barrett Scholars. The Barrett Scholars Research Program is an 11-week summer intensive in which 20 undergraduates in the life and natural sciences engage in research and work directly with faculty. The program intentionally fosters close mentorship and emphasizes individual achievement within the context of team-based science. Whether editing yeast-DNA using the revolutionary CRISPR technique or probing the factors influencing squirrel behavior, for example, participants develop technical skills, immerse themselves in the logic and creativity of science, and gain experience analyzing and presenting data. By living together on campus during their intensive summer-research experience, Barrett Scholars develop supportive connections with their peers.
